"The 1890s was a prosperous era in Springfield (Massachusetts). Among the city's leading residents were H. Curtis Rowley and Thirza Merriam Rowley, publishers of the Merriam-Webster dictionaries. Their three-story, 23-room Victorian on Crescent Hill saw many celebrated visitors to Springfield during that period, President and Mrs. William McKinley among them." -- Connecticut Valley Historical Museum The Rowleys lived in luxury at Wyndhurst (pronounced Winehurst) from 1893 to 1920. High atop Crescent Hill, the family passed their days strolling the grounds, admiring the view of Springfield and the Connecticut Valley, entertaining visitors and tending to the family business, the G & C Merriam Publishing Company. Take a moment to visit with the Rowleys at Wyndhurst and discover the good life in Springfield one hundred years ago. Some families know a great deal about their roots; others know very little. This site is an attempt to record what I've learned about our family history. In these modern times, families tend to be scattered all over the country, if not the world. One of the goals of this web site is to help our family stay connected even though we live far apart. This is a work in progress, so please contact me if you have any information that might help round out the picture. Web site last updated 6 September 2000 |
